We pull out our small basket of 9 different plastic fruits and pick one of the fruits we’ve decided it represents - from love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness to goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. And then we begin… What do you think this fruit means? How does it help us to be more like Jesus? When can we share this fruit with others? So many good things to talk about! As you can guess, the fruit of Patience is one that could be visualized and modeled most mornings as we learn to wait - for our turn, for snack, for playground. Yes, patience is practiced! Just like the visual of a basket of plastic fruit, a story can teach as well. This delightful book, Maybe God is Like That Too, by Jennifer Grant was a gift for our class from one of my precious preschoolers. Through the eyes of a little boy, we are treated to how we all can see God. Throughout his day, the little boy sees what the different fruits of the Spirit look like in the actions of those around him. By the end of his day, he can now imagine what God is like through all these beautiful signs of His Spirit. And best of all, he desires to “be like that too.” The gift of a story to not only entertain, but to teach and shape little minds. And for me, when a story captures the meaning of a lesson, it weaves all the pieces of a lesson together. I watch my preschoolers with delight as they run with glee - racing around the playground. Joy is found in many moments in our classroom. From making that perfect “s” to finishing that tricky puzzle to reaching the monkey bars, joy is found in the little things. But how do you and I keep that mindset when we’re far from little? Maybe it’s being reminded of the small and simple things in life. Things for which to be grateful. Things that bring us joy and self-worth. My preschoolers might be too young to write a gratitude list like you and me. But, they are definitely tiny sponges - waiting to soak in all that we can share with them. And something worth sharing - ways we can nurture self-worth. Near and dear to my heart as both teacher and parent, I can’t think of a more universal hope and wish for each child. How they warm my heart. Sounds silly - until you know they belong to my Whale class . A class of little children who by their laughter and smiles and simply their presence, added meaning to my days throughout this preschool year. The end of a school year is truly bittersweet. No way to get around it. Especially when these children are leaving our beloved building and embarking on “big school”, as we like to call it. While I’ll miss them more than they know, I’m filled with excitement for their next step in a journey of lifelong learning. Just like a parent, I’m cheering them on for all that’s ahead - excitedly watching as they leave our little pod and swim to places and experiences they can’t even imagine. It may be an ending for our class as we know it - a class of Whales with silly sock feet. But, it’s truly just a beginning in each child’s life. When you’re four years old, what are you grateful for? From very practical to super sweet to deep and profound, the answers always delight me. I love to see life through their eyes. Sometimes, it makes you cry with laughter, often it makes you smile with joy, but always it seems to find a way of grounding you. ⁣ ⁣ The other day, I asked a few in my class what the word “explore” meant to them. “To explore different places,” said one little girl. One took it even further and said, “to explore in the jungle!” My nature-lover was quick to pick up on exploring meant “hiking.” I know that’s a favorite activity for this one. And, a quiet girl chimed in with “going on an adventure.”⁣ ⁣ As I looked through my photos for something that resonated, I stumbled upon this one with happy memories of “exploring” on a trip out West. While it was far from the jungle, it was a different place for me. And, indeed it was an adventure with plenty of hiking to be found. ⁣ ⁣ I think it’s the tunnel that draws me in - that makes me love this picture so much. The reminder of not always knowing what’s on the other side. Near the end of the outing, they appeared. And, we were transported into their world for a brief period of time. As our outing drew to a close, it was as if these gentle giants knew - a final wave of a fluke and good-bye. Another preschool year has come to a close and we have said our good-byes. Despite the uncertainty of the outside world this year, the familiarity of preschool routines still carried on within the walls of our little classroom. I’ll miss those precious ones who brought joy and laughter each morning in their appreciation and excitement for the simple things. I love being both a teacher and “student” of these children!
